Cayo Largo is located in the Canarreos Archipelago, to the south of the island of Cuba and is officially a territory of the special municipality of the Isle of Youth. It is 177 km (118 mi.) away from Havana and 135 km (90 mi.) away from Nueva Gerona, capital city of the Isle of Youth.
The key has an extension of 37 sq km (14 sq mi) and has an elongated and narrow shape. It reaches 6 km (4 mi) in its widest section, while it is only 1 km (less than a mile) wide in its narrowest sections. Its beaches are located along the 27 km (18 mi) of coasts around the key. The most important are Lindamar, Sirena, Los Cocos, and Paraíso, all bathed by the peaceful waters of the Caribbean Sea. The key treasures one of the best preserved marine bottoms in the globe, according to specialized magazines like National Geographic.
